with all the legal stuff going on about VIN numbers on antique cars I need info on numbers, plates and the location of the plates on a 1930 coupe. I bought my car, a basket case, in 1979. I replace all the wood, a long time ago, don't remember any plates on the sill or cross sill in front of the seat. I bought a title from minnesota many years ago and registered it in Illinois with no problem but now am trying to sell the car.

The Filling station has what you need.

now, where to get the number stamped, I don't know. But I am sure I have seen advertisers who can stamp your VIN on there too. Someone will chime in soon after the super bowl.

A "VIN" was not used in 1930. It was called a "car serial number" instead.

The car serial number plate on a 1930 coupe was attached to the passenger side main sill, facing the passenger side door and just forward of the seat.

"123" means that the vehicle was the 123rd standard coupe built in the Janesville factory in 1930.

The car number will be 21 AD XXXX. The car numbers were sequential beginning with 1001 for the first assembled in a given plant. They were for both cars and 1/2 ton trucks. 1 1/2 ton trucks were a separate sequence. So the body style did not affect the car number. Each body style had a identification body number and sequential id number beginning with 1 for the first of a body style.

There is a supplier on E-Bay that has duplicate original tags and will put on your info, $25. He is located in Argintina. I got a tag from him and am verty satisfied.
