Glad to keep company with you gents, I've got a '34 Master sedan I've been trying to get some power out of. I think I've cleaned, timed, primed, tweaked everything just right but still not satisfied with power. I believe the advance is not advancing far enough or responding freely enough, 1/4"? It's a rebuilt diaphram and distributor moves freely. So my question is what vacuum should I have at the advance? I've got 14.5psi at the manifold and half of that at the advance. Any words of wisdom? PS; know I have to learn what a UBB Code is all about!

Hi Don V, Assuming that you have a timing light, don't worry about how much the vacuum is advancing the timing, but rather , check to see if you are getting any mechanical advance inside the distributor. You can also check this by visual inspection of the distributor, but to see if it actually is working is more important. For satisfactory engine performance you need both the mechanical and vacuum advance.

Junkyard; He means Engineer. Inginear is pigeon english for Engineer. I learnt pigeon english up in Papua New Guinea, whilst hunting with my mate, crocodile dundee. http://www.walindi.com/AboutPNG.html -------- Dictionary: 1880.—“… the English traders of the early days … instead of inducing the Chinese to make use of correct words rather than the misshapen syllables they had adopted, encouraged them by approbation and example, to establish Pigeon English—a grotesque gibberish which would be laughable if it were not almost melancholy.”—Capt. W. Gill, River of Golden Sand, i. 156.

Don, On my 34 Master is set the timing on the mark with the octane selector on zero and the advance the octane selector to 10 degrees advnced. This is as recommened in the manual if higher octane fuel is used. This makes a big improvement in power. The engine was designed to run on 70 octane gas. Also do the same on my 39 Chev. with the same results.

Hi Don,
There is also something else you need to check! I was having the same problem as you are. Are you using the correct 34 carb? If you are then you need to check the vacuum ports on the carb. I found a bulletin from Carter saying that they were having problems with the vacuum ports plugging up. You need to remove the 3 rivets and clean out the 2 ports. I'll tell you they were right!
