I have a 1953 chev with a 54 block and 56 head according to serial numbers. I currently have solid lifters and contemplating changing them to hydraulic lifters. Is it just a matter of taking out the SL and replacing it with the HL and then adjusting? Or am I oversimplifying the process and other parts must also be changed?

If it isn't broken, fiddle with it anyway so you have something to repair.

With the hydraulics, I believe there needs to be an oil passage, going in a horizontal direction, through the lifter bores, only found on hydraulic lifter engines.

Unless the 54 engine block is a truck engine block it should have hydraulic lifters from the factory. Well let me take that back, if it is a US engine.

I think the '54 and '55 stick shift engines have solid lifters. My '55 235 has solid lifters. And when we put a power glide '54 engine in a '50 hardtop we had a lot of trouble with the replacement lifters. Those replacement lifters were part of the cost of in a great engine shop in our area....My advice - stick with solid lifters.

The pre 1958 blocks are not drilled for oil that fills the lifters. The 1958-1962 blocks have a different oiling system and they can interchange lifters.
Agree, the modern replacement lifters leave much to be desired.(solid or hydraulic)....and that goes for the camshafts also.
