Hi! I have a 1931 Chevrolet and I am trying to adjust the differential. I put in new gears from Larry Jackson. Since then there has been a noise on deceleration only. I check the gears and found that I had toe contact and that the pinion was too far back. I took it apart and found that the front bearing was breaking down. I had the bearings replaced and now the adjustment begins. I want to make sure that they are adjusted properly this time. I am following the instructions in the Chevrolet Repair Manual 1929 - 1932. I am looking at step 6 and 7 where the pinion is positioned forward or back. The question is how do you determine how deep the gears should mesh? The manual has drawings but no specifics to how deep. Is there anyone that can shed some light on how to achieve the proper depth? I know I have to add and remove shims but the question is; how do you know when you have it right? I agree that picture 2 looks good but picture 1 does not. Are they both made at the same adjustment and backlash and is the back lash within the 0.003-0.010 range? Unfortunately until the backlash is within the proper range (hopefully nearer the lower end) the pattern will can not be properly evaluated.

i would use plastic gauge for mash clearance. Then Mic it with a micrometer or veneer gauge. Just like you would for main bearing and connecting rods. Then you will know if the mash is right. Auto parts stores should have the size you will need.
