I remember that years ago when the gas pump delivered a gallon it would sound a off with a ring/bell/chime (pick one). Whatever happened to that and when? Anyone know?
Thanks,

I think it went the way of $.25 a gallon gas and the mechanical metered gas pumps, along with the crank handle on the side of the pump to zero and reset the pump. Remember that crank?
Remember the "pay-at-the-pump" when you handed the service station attendant a dollar bill or two out the window after he cleaned the windshield and checked the oil and aired up the tires?
I cranked a couple of these as a service station attendant when I was a teenager.

I can hear the old maid school teacher (Edna Mae Huckabee) now when she drove up in her 49 Hudson...Bless her heart!...she always gave me good grades and a bright shiny dime tip!

" Hello Mack...A dollar's worth of regular, check the oil and air up the tires...please!" She never had to ask to clean the windshield, or to sweep out the floorboard, I did that automatically for her.

"Pay At The Pump"? Heck I pay at the pump here in Oregon every time I get gas in one of my vehicles. And we still get our windshield cleaned each time we get gas as well.

...yeah, and you get out and pump your own gas and stick the plastic in a slot? Maybe not in Eagle Pint.....haha carbana

They still have a service station attendant and full survice at the Alton, Mo. Wright Bros. Phillips 66 station and garage.

Absolutely not! Here in Oregon it is against the law to pump your own gas. It is just like the old days...you pull up to the pump and the dude asks how much gas ya want. After he puts gas in your car he washes your windshield and then you pay him from behind the wheel of your car.

New Jersey is also a full service State. It's illegal to pump your own gas.

Attendants don't clean windows, or speak english! (except for..."cash or credit?")

You are lucky if they say "tank-ya"...

Yeah, now I remember that Are-we-gone had that law,

Tree huggers affect nearly everything in Are We Gone? The somehow figured that it was too dangerous for little old ladies, morons (seem to be an abundance of them there according to sKipper) and kids to pump their own gas. So they get kids and aliens to do it instead. Hmmmmmmm newangel devil

Well Mack, it's because most drivers here in Jersey don't know what side the gas cap is on!

...and we all here are in such a frenzy and can't wait to get stuck in the next traffic jam, that we don't look at getting gas as a social event.

I sure wish things here were like the rest of the country. Did I say "full service"?

Well, at least the gas jockies are employed. They may not be legal, but they are working.

How can we ignore it when you made the posting in big red print?

By the way, I think that most of the people that pump gas in Oregon don't belong to a union.

I pumped gas at Sunoco. We had Blue Sunoco in those days. When I turned 16 I got a job at Dayton Pump Mfg. Co. after school and half day on Saturday. They made Rapadayton gas pumps. Since I got into old cars and interested in old things I have only seen two Rapadayton pumps. One in use and one in a museum.

Remember the site glass on the pump with balls in it that moved around while you pumped gas and the change maker we had on our belt?

Mack, I'll agree with Scipper because I'm sure the guys pumping gas here in Jersey are not union.

...but, most likely they are related somehow to the owners of several stations in the immediate area. I work with a former pumper and he has explained how it works. You work pumping gas and selling goodies (cigarettes, gum, bags of chip, etc) for years until you are promoted within the family pyramid. Then you are a 1/100th part owner and it moves on from there. The promotions come quicker if you marry one of the higher ups daughters!

Strange arraingement but true!

At an Early Six Cylinder Tour in New Jersey a few years ago where I purchased gas for our 31 the pumper would operate the pump but handed me the hose to put it in the car. When the tank was full I would give the hose back to him and we would complete the sale. I don't know if that was legal but that is the way we did it.

I always get a kick out of the pumpers trying to find the gas filler neck on a '56-'72 Chevy. Most give up in frustration and after a while either motion you along or ask where that blankety-blank thing is located. If you went immediately went inside to do some business would they fill the trunk or crankcase with gasoline?

Mr. Mack

No need to be sorry about that post!! Enjoyed the humor!! Kinda like wrath, or was that wreath??

Chipper

Talk about gas and oil mix - was welding with an ol pipliner years ago and knew was getting low on gas, so sent a guy to put 5 gals of gas in it so could keep welding until noon. Not paying any attention to him doing his job, he came back to me and said "it wouldn't hold 5 gals, overflowed and ran on ground". Good thing he didn't try to restart eng as he had poured the gas in crankcase until it finally ran out of breather!! My-oh-my, sure hope he didn't fill up his own gas tank.

Jim.

The pump on my Avatar is a 1947 Tokeim (sp) pump I restored. I bought the pump from a company in Hannibal, Mo. that had been selling gas pumps for years. He had a gas pump junkyard (pumps that had been taken out of service or replaced with new ones).
You can buy any part of most any pump from several pump collectors. They cost but it is like our cars if it what you want....... This pump has the handle to cancel the sale, the site glass, etc. The price per gallon on the pump was 27 cents per gallon so it was taken out of service several years ago.
I agree that prices are getting out of hand in some cases. I have a lot of money in my '41 but it is the car I wanted to restore and drive . JIM

The gas filler neck is located behind the license plate on our 1969 Impala, our 1970 Impala and on our 1984 Oldsmobile. In the 40 years that we drove the '69 Impala before it was totaled, I can remember only a few instances over the years that the pump attendant asked where the gas filler neck was. Same thing on the 1970 Impala. On our 1984 Oldsmobile only once as an attendant asked the location of the filler neck. It amazes me that these young attendants even know where the gas filler neck is on these older vehicles. Maybe the gas station attendants are more aware of things like that in Oregon than they are in Texas.

I went to our local gas station in Burlington N.J. the other day.It was very cold and the gas guy seemed reluctant to come out of his little heated booth and pump my gas. So,I got out and pumped my own gas. When I was done and put the gas cap back on,he came out for the money. When he counted it he looked at me and said "NO TIP"? I thought I was on Candid Camera but Alan Funt never appeared. So I just politely said no......against my better judgement!

I am in Texas and hardly ever have a problem finding a gas filler on a Rexas car, even a 56 Chevy car. One time I was in Cali-farn-ia and was driving a rental rice rocket from Japan and I couldn't find the release for the gas filler door. The the really nice 7-11 guy with a turban on his head showed me where to pry with the tire iron to get it to bend and pop open. Then a surfer came up and showed me the release....it wuz under the driver's seat. The rental guy didn't notice the bent filler door when I had to take the car back to the rental place that afternoon because the right hand front caliper brake locked up going down the freeway somewhere between Ventura and Oxnard, that was kinds scary, I had to put the car into reverse to unlock the caliper, it made a bad noise all the way to LAX. I had to wait 3 hours to get another "full sized" Mazda.

Thanks,
It was replaced by the sound of the $$$ leaving your wallet.
The only "ringing" you will hear now is when your head spins at the price you are confronted with when the pump finally stops!
