Is it possible for an ammeter to allow current to pass through without the indicator needle working? Everything works on the car (39 Master Deluxe town sedan) but I have no needle movement either to Charge or to Discharge. Bob

I had one seize in the middle. I had to replace it.
My 1951 1 Ton is now on the road! My 38 Master 4 Door is also now on the road .

Try lightly tapping it with your knuckles. Sounds like yours has been stuck for a while. Might not work. Good luck, Charlie

It's also worth checking behind the dash to be sure that someone hasn't disconnected the ammeter and shunted the leads or simply shunted across the terminals. I saw that once.
Hope you find the problem.

Make sure it is hooked up correctly with a wire on each terminal and not with both wires on one terminal.

Thanks to all who replied. I have wires where they are supposed to be. I think I will remove the plate that holds the two gauges and just slightly try to move the needle by hand to see if it is froze up. I'd like to remove the wires and put them on another ammeter and just let it hang behind the dash to see if it would work, but I can't find one cheap enough to make it an option. I am not an electrical guy so I do not know if I can use my Volt meter to do this or not.

Use your voltmeter and measure the voltage on each end of the gage. If you have voltage on each end the meter is not burned out but the needle may be stuck. If you have voltage on just one end then the meter is defective.

I did as you suggested and there is voltage at both studs on the back of the ammeter. Is it safe to assume that if there is voltage there also will be amps? Next thing is to remove the gauge plate and see if I can move the needle by hand.

I think that is the appropriate action to take. Assuming everything is wired correctly you should see some movement of the needle when the ignition is turned or/headlights, or stop lights.
