The alemite fitting thread got me to thinking that Chevrolet originally intended that most fittings were intended to be lubed with 160wt oil. With the conversion over the years to grease, there probably isn't much difference with the exception of the steering box and universal joint. My question is twofold. Should oil be used in the steering box and u-joint? Can a grease gun be modified to take oil without having it all run out?

You really need to think about reading the lube chart in the owners manual and the repair manual.

It is critical that oil be used in the steering box, transmission, U-joint and rear end. Chassis and wheel bearing grease can be used elsewhere except for the water pump. The water pump needs a water insoluble grease or water pump grease.

There is no need to put oil in a grease gun. All you need is a bottle with a tapered top or small funnel or make a funnel from a piece of paper. Once you pour the oil in you should be done. Of course you need to remove the Alemite fitting to pour the oil in the steering box and U-joint.
