I have my transmission out of my 51 1 Ton at the moment. I am contemplating replacing the pilot bushing while I am in there. Th engine is a 216. I am wondering what method to use to remove the bushing.
My 1951 1 Ton is now on the road! My 38 Master 4 Door is also now on the road .

There is a several tools for that. The cheep way is to find a piece of rod that is a neat fit in the bush then fill the cacity with thick grease and hammer the rod in this forces the grease out and that pushes the bush out in front of it. Tony

Since you're going to replace it, and assuming you first have the correct replacement in hand, use any means to remove the old bushing, even if destroys old bushing -- just be careful not to damage the flywheel.

Most parts houses lend pullers at no cost and its real easy if your not too far away. I did my 47 and 54 in less time than it would take to find the cup grease

Packing with grease works very well, just us an old input shaft and brass hammer.

If you have a problem or don't want the grease to squirt out, just tap it with a 5/8" tap and screw a bolt in it and pull it out. I think it is a 5/8" bolt like those in a farm tractor or farm implement. The last one I did the tap went all the way thru the Pilot bushing and pushed it out when I kept turning the tap...easy! I even thought about using the old pilot bearing again, what with the grooves to hold some grease! just screw a bolt in a ways by hand insert the bushing and unscrew the bolt, or tap.

Tear apart a slice of bread, or more if needed, and stuff it through the hole in the bushing until it is full. Drive in a dowel, the input shaft or other suitably sized object. It works like the grease only not nearly as messy and the size of the driven object is not as critical.

I removed the pilot bushing today. I took a 5/8 bolt, ground it down to size and used the grease method to force it out. I was really impressed with the results. A friend of mine told me he uses a socket to do the job.
