I was taking a good look at the rear of my 31 Chevrolet Independence sedan and noticed that the grease fittings are different than any I have ever seen before. They have two pins sticking out of the sides. Something I have never seen before. What do I use to get grease into these fittings?

There is a grease gun that fits tese fittings. I think it was part of the tool kit. It's about nine inches long and a plunger. Looks like a small tire air pump. If you're not concerned with being original you can install the modern zerk fittings that work with the grease guns used by service stations.

Those are called "Alemite" fittings and they are stock equipment on the 1931 Chevrolet. You should have them on the front of the chassis as well. To keep your car original I suggest that you stay with the Alemite fittings. By the way, they are still available. You can purchase an adapter from Gary Wallace for your modern grease gun so that the Alemite fittings can be serviced.

Thanks - how do I find Gary Wallace? I agree that these fitting should stay as original, so an adapter would be a good choice.
Another thing is that two of my hood pull-latches (with curved top) are missing. I called the "Filling Station" and was told that they have been on back order for over two years.

Here is the web site for Gary Wallace: http://www.20schevyparts.com/Back order for two years? I wouldn't call that a back order.....I would call that a part that is "no longer available"!

Thanks for Gary's address - I will call him tomorrow. As to the 2-year backorder, I had a 1-year backorder on a pair of new replacement side window rubber gaskets for my 1955 Safari (very heavy duty and molded to fit perfectly). After a year, they were shipped to me. However, now plan to keep looking for two used hood hold down pulls and a used sun visor, and expect they will be hard to find. Thanks again,
Fred

Hi Fritz31 For you and all the other owners of Chevrolets with Alemite pin type grease fittings, you can get 3 different adapters and one adapter which comes with a hose that can be used on any grease gun. These are still made by Alemite and can be found on www.amazon.com for sale by a few different vendors. Here is a link that you can click on http://www.alemite.com/catalog/details.aspx?identifier=accessories_fittings_couplers that takes you to the section of the Alemite webite for the pin type grease couplers. Click on the plus sign in front of the part number to show a picture of the fitting. If you google or bing these parts numbers VB942(coupler w/o wing), 50491 (coupler with wing male pipe), 51185 (coupler with wing female pipe) or A908-A (VB942 with 12 inch whip hose), you should have a number of different places come up that sells these. I just sent a A908-A to a customer in Slovenia and looked to be a nice setup. Here also is the link that you can click on http://www.alemite.com/catalog/details.aspx?identifier=fittings_pintype that takes you to the section of the website for the pin type fittings.

Grease cups were used up to about 1919. Aruthur Gulborg invented the screw type grease gun to be used with the Alemite pin type fitting that he also invented in 1916. They were first used around 1916/1918. The U.S. Army started to use them in 1918. Button head fittings were used for only a short time around 1922. The Zerk fitting was invented by Oscar V. Zerk and pat. 1,697,217 applied for on April 19, 1924. The pin type fittings and grease gun adapter are available from Restoration Supply. Keep it lubricated, Mike

Thanks for all of the help. I contacted Gary Wallace and yesterday received an adapter for my grease gun, so I should be all set. Gary also had my missing sun visor for my '31 sedan, which was also received yesterday, along with some other small items. Thanks again,
Fred
