I need some assistance (again). I picked up the Chevy on Friday and did the usual front to rear assessment. Found the brake issue problem on Saturday, but could not get it started. Started over on Sunday and found out it has a 6 V coil, a 6V regulator, but a 12V generator????? Ran a wire from coil to battery to bypass ignition and jumper from stater to battery. Got it running and it runs quite well but what kind of electrical system (mess) do I have?? The headlights are marked "guide T3" (which appear to be 12V?). No tail light bulbs or dome bulb. Can you run a 12V generator with a 6 v system? Any ideas or suggestions welcomed.

There was both a 6 V and 12 V t-3 Guide head lamp sealed beam.
A 6 V system must have a 6 V generator.
Check the head lamps with a 6 V battery. If very dim they are 12 V.
Perhaps all you may need is a good 6 V generator to get things going.

The 12V in the system was probably blowing the tail light and dome light bulbs. Check your fuel guage, it may not be working due to a burned out sender in the tank. talk

I hope the sending unit in the tank is not burn out. Not sure but I would think that the gauge would burn open first.

If your generator is in good shape and you don't feel like buying a another complete unit, yours could be converted to 6 volts. I'd be happy to do this for you. Let me know if you have any other questions or concerns.

SDS,
a. How did you determine that the generator is 12 volt.

b. Most sealed beam bulbs are designated 6V or 12V.

c. Is your generator in good shape. Will it run when hooked upto a battery?

d. What is the number on the little oval plate on the generator?
