Recently, a friend gave me an Eagle Cap in really rough shape.
The Cap is just a rusted out shell with a bit of metal where the Eagle attaches. How is the Eagle attached? I'm looking to remove the Eagle from the Cap. Thanks as always, Al W.

Yes Bill, I have, and I appreciate your work very much. Is there a way to access text? I'm trying to learn how the Eagle was attached to the Cap. Thanks, Al W.

Well, they sell copies of the 1931 Service News and the quality is very good. But for very special friends, we sometimes let them know of some secret links....

Bill your quick with an answer but I'm slow to learn. Special Friend and all, I still don't understand how the General attached the Eagle to the Cap. Going to bed now as confusion makes my head hurt. Believe me, my head hurts quite often!! Al W.

The Eagle was riveted to the cap.

My original eagle radiator cap has a diecast base the same as show at www.1931chevrolet.com , and the eagle is held to the base by 3 screws under the large brass washer.

Seen them both ways.....riveted (looks similar to a rivet head) and screwed on. However, the caps that I have seen with screws were reproductions.

Never saw an original with screws. I have had ~10 in the past 40 years and all were die-cast with the wings and tail having a shaft that fits into holes in the cap part. Shaft ends are all peined or crimped to hold the two pieces together. Some of the reproductions have had screws or if a first class rechrome is done then the two parts are taken apart and put back together with screws.

All the original '31-2 Eagle caps were die-cast.

The newer reproduction Eagle caps are stainless steel, but, as Chippy Dippy said, all of the original caps were die-cast.

All of my bases are die cast, the original description of "Rusted" made me think of an original steel cap. Maybe it was meant to read "corroded".

Rust can coat the parts that come in contact with rusty water. That must have been what happened to the one that was 'rusty'.
