Hello Gentlemen, I haven't been on in about a year. This past summer, my '47 was at a stoplight and as I let out the clutch to take off from the stop something let loose in the drivetrain. I haven't been able to address the problem until this week, as I had a fire in my home, and everything got put on hold. The engine runs but, the car will not move in any gear.

The clutch and assembly are attached to the flywheel properly. The Yoke and Ujoint are intact. I can turn the yoke by hand about 2 1/3 turn in either direction with the wheels on the ground.

If I put it in gear, and let out the clutch, there is a horrible flopping noise from under the car. It also does that if I roll the car a bit. Any thoughts?

I have been wondering what happened to you.
If its the front U joint yoke Remove and disassemble the transmission and you will find the problem.....broken gear, teeth missing, etc.
If its the rear u joint yoke theat turns it in the differential.

Yah, my livelyhood came to a halt after my fire. The week before my fire, I was rearended at a red light on my Harley, and that got totaled too.

The sounds from the drivetrain are right from in front of the seat, so I am thinking it is in the tailpiece of the transmission.

It looks like I have to take the transmission out from inside the passenger compartment through the floor? It doesn't look too fun either.

I have a 3speed transmission out of a '54 truck. Would this be a suitable replacement?

If you can turn the ujoint that far with the wheels on the ground I would suspect the driveshaft has let go of the pinion shaft or teeth have fallen of inside the rear end.
Drop the rear cover of the differential and watch what moves when the ujoint is turned.

Sorry to hear about your fire, accident and trouble with the car.

Except for the location of the noise, I'd have guess you had broken an axle.

Let us know what you find. I don't think the 54 transmission will fit but I could be wrong.

Good luck with it and welcome back,
Charlie computer

Note that the original poster made his last post back in 2010. The car has probably been junked by now.
