Hi.... I saw this motor and it is a local seller meaning I could pick it up if someone can identify the thing. Any ideas?

Bet that is one hard to find manifold. Single exhaust port for heater. First one of those I have seen.


28 Chevy LO Capitol 1 ton, 28 National 2 dr coach, 71 Chevy Custom Camper 3/4 ton. Also 23 Oldsmobile Economy truck and a 24 Olds sport touring.

That heater manifold for the single port would have to be aftermarket. The 28 did have an authorized Chevrolet heater. It is listed in the CSN. I have one NOS that will be installed in my Convertible Sport Cabriolet.

Thanks guys. I stopped at this guys place a month or so ago looking at some of the other parts he sells, but had no luck. It was so cold out there, that I completely forgot to ask to look at this motor even though I knew it was there. I did send him an email, and I asked him to get out the carb cleaner and clean off the motor number and the engine casting number below it including any letters that might come before the numbers.

Now, down to business. If I bought this, I know I would be asking for an impossible guess at the cost of restoration and the availability of parts, but can anyone take a shot at the best case and worst case scenarios to rebuild this?

Can the transmission be rebuilt and salvaged?

My original motor came with two heads, but the oil pan and crank were laying beside the motor, and the pistons were long gone. I would like to start in on this complete stuck motor and see what could be done. Suggestions? Ideas? Money is no object... for Jay Leno.... it is for me. No hurry on this, but it might be worth the investment or at least to keep in storage.

The costs associated depend on the actual condition. Is it stuck because of valves or pistons or crankshaft? Most assume that it is pistons but not always the case. How long has it been stuck? If years and years then it is likely that major machine work and possibly sleeving cylinders will be necessary. Also be sure to check closely for freeze cracks if it has been stored outside. Rain water has an unique ability to migrate to unsuspected places and then start eating at the parts, freezing in the winter and just being a bad deal. Cost estimate ranges from a few hundred $$$ to $ 4-5,000.

The transmission can be rebuilt as long as the parts are not too pitted or corroded or worn. You will not know until it is taken apart. Reproduced shafts and bushings are available from C&P Automotive (Billy Possum Brand).
