i have my truck in for body work that i could not due, hurt my back. when an old timer came in, he saw my truck and said that on the top of the valve covers, there needs to be cups to hold oil, these were placed in holes to drip oil into the lifters, there is a foam like pad under the cover. i fould an article that said i needed to put oil in the holes a few times a day but nowhere could i find anything about the covers having some type of cup to drip oil. does anyone know anything about these cups

No cups, just four holes that lead to troughs to distribute the oil to the rockers. Also a felt pad to help retain and distribute the oil that lays on the top of the valve train.

 thank you so much, i been looking for the cups for a week. the truck should be done by june 2011. a three year project.

A squirt type oil can is used in the holes to dispense the oil.

Yep just like the others have said, just squirt oil in the 4 holes on top the cover, but I have to say, I don't trust those holes so I pull the valve cover off and give it a drink that way. Then I know all is well oiled. Now I bet the old timer got confused with the old 1920s, 30s IH Mc Cormick Deering tractors (10-20,regular,F-20 ect.) which did have two flip type cups in the valve cover as well as two primer cups for restarting if the engine died while running on kerosene fuel. Those also had no oil flow to the valve train from the pump. The two flip cap cups just let oil from a squirt can into two pans mounted on top the rocker shaft and it had felt wicks that poked through holes in the pans that let oil ooze down as the engine ran. I bet that was what he was thinking.
