I had to get my grille top moulding rechromed and now I have to paint it. The word "CHEVROLET" is red on the '48. I've searched to see if someone has previously identified a color match for the red trim paint that Chevrolet used extensively in the 40s, but didn't come up with anything. Is there a really close match out there that someone has come up with for the red letters on the moulding?

Just find a medium red. That would best describe the color when new.

Try Chevs of the 40s and maybe Filling Station too. They have One Shot lettering enamel in red, blue and black for trim and hubcaps. I used the enamel for models, I think the color was crimson. I'll look tomorrow to make sure.

Thanks for the tip on "1 Shot". I'll give it a try.

Chevs of forties also sells a set of decals for those letters.I havn't tried them yet but they appear to be better than painting.

I ended up finding a great red color match in those spray touch up paint cans you can find at Autozone or similar. Taped off the letters - that does take a while - but it came out looking beautiful and very much like the original, which is sprayed.

I've seen the vinyl decals and was most impressed ...with the price...but they look good ! I did all mine with what I found in my local craft store...it's an enamel paint pen , about four bucks...Works well , if you have a steady hand . I did my hub-caps , had them finished before I noticed my "Chevrolet" was painted red and the rest blue ! Look's...ahhh..interesting.
My pen say's DecoColor on the side...

I've used the Chev's of the 40's red and blue and has proven to last for years..I did rough up the areas and applied removed on a level surface
