I'm getting ready to dump the 85-90 tranny lube out of my 48, and, replace it with fresh 85 -140. My question is - Is there another fill plug to add lube into the universal joint area that I should put gear lube in as well, or, will just filling the tranny suffice.

The gear oil will not drain out of the U joint area so just add 1 1/2 pints to the transmission. The 140 will gradually work into the area and the #90 will return to the transmission and "mix".
