I ran across this tid bit on Restoration Battery's website.
http://www.restorationbattery.com/gmproducts.html

Scroll down to the Chevrolet section. They list it like this.

1963 - 1966 6 Cyclinder 283 & 307 Without A/C
22F DC12

1963 - 1965 ALL with A/C + 327 & 409
558 DC12

Anybody have any more information on this? The only other bit I can come up with is this picture from the Motor Trend review of the 64 Impala (with 327) which seems to agree with Restoration Battery's recommendation of a back cap with light colored letters.

We went with Restoration Battery's recommended 558 for Sabrina's Impala. It looks good in the car and I think John at Restoration Battery is on point. Hopefully, someone else will have some real knowledge on this and confirm that the 558 is correct for the 64's with 327s.

Oh, by the way, my electrical issues were caused by a bad accessory harness that was causing a draw. It looks like the issue is resolved and the battery, alternator and regulator are all OK for now.

Dave,
The 558 is the correct type for your '64. Black caps and yellow lettering.

Jim-
Glad you got your electical issue sorted out. I went through 3 mechanical voltage regulators before getting the solid state one that finally worked right. It looks like you got the right battery too. ok

Vern-
Yes, I agree, based on the old photo I have and a reputable battery company's research.
