Tearing apart the differential on my 28 National. Have removed wheels, hubs, breakdrums, bearing retainer plates and gaskets. How do get the axle out?

I put the the nut back on and uses a piece of 2x4 against the back of the nut and tapped gently with a hammer.The bearing is a tight fit, but will slide out.

The bearing retainer plate is all that holds the bearing and axle in place. Nearly any puller can be used. The nut and washer and two or three armed puller will do the job.

If it is really hard to remove, consider a slide-hammer. Be sure to use the nut and protect the threads on the end of the axle.

I used a slide hammer. I made an adapter by welding a nut that fits the axle threads to a nut that fits the slide hammer. It worked great.

Far easier to place the wheel & hub back on the axle shaft taper with the car jacked up(no axle key),replace the retaining nut,but don't tighten it up,and grab hold of the outside of the wheel felloe,and carefully slide it forward towards the car,then give it a good pull back toward the axle hub retaining hub nut,and the axle should just slide out(assuming that you'e removed the bearing retaining plate).
