also ebay has them often, use a 6 volt coil from 1954 Chevy and condensor also

I have a 1927 Chevy Capital AA 4 Door also a 1927 Chevy Touring car, a 1936 Chevy 1/2 ton and a 2010 Corvette LT3 Convertible and a 1953 Packard Caribbean. My tow car is a 2011 Suburban.

If you want to keep the original style coil, you will just have to find another original that works. I know of no one who rebuilds them. It takes lots of magnet wire and lots of counting turns and it just isn't cost effective for someone to do them. One thing that might make an old one work is hook up another condensor to it. The original coil has the condensor inside the coil housing. Good news is lots of them show up on ebay. It may take luck to find a known good one as most people don't test them, but I have gotten good ones 3 out of 3 times so far. Better good news is like Ken said, get one at an auto parts store for a 54 chevy and also a condensor and you will be good to go. I got the one on my 28 from NAPA and it never ran better! Now way back in the day, Chevy offered a modern type coil and a coil bracket that mounts the new coil in the original location. It may take some hunting but those are out there still.


28 Chevy LO Capitol 1 ton, 28 National 2 dr coach, 71 Chevy Custom Camper 3/4 ton. Also 23 Oldsmobile Economy truck and a 24 Olds sport touring.

Has any one tried to install a modern, 6 volt, coil inside the original housing?

I have been told that a VW coil will fit inside. Just make sure that there is some way to cool the coil with heat sink or ?.

The coil on ebay is missing the resistor coil on top, but the guy selling it may have one. I got a couple from him a year ago.
