Hi Guys.
I am just about to replace the diff pinion seal on my 12 bolt prior to reinstalling it. I have the 1965 manual and have measured the spinning pinion with small inch pound torque wrench. I came up with 3 inch pounds without the brake drums on as the maximum reading. The workshop manual doesn't say anything about about replacing the crush sleeve , but does say to use a new nut. Would it be OK to use thread lock on the old nut ? Has any body else measured the bearing pre load, as the other sources on the internet say that it should be between 5 and 15 inch pounds on the spinning pinion.
Thanks and regards to you all,

JACK

I've always checked it with only the pinion installed and the carrier out. When I have put a new pinion seal in I usually just take the yoke off and install the seal, put the yoke back on with the same nut and tighten it up. I know that its not by the book. I have a Snap On impact that works good and I run the nut up and then hammer it a bit more. If your putting in new pinion bearings then its important to install a new crush sleeve and check with a torque wrench to get the proper preload on the pinion bearings. Don
