Well I will try to help you with the spring. Look on the lower edge of the firewall above the steering column and slightly inboard you should find where the firewall is bent forward and in this area you will find a hole near the edge. The other point of interest is the arm on the carburetor that is the throttle. One end of the spring is attached here. Hold the spring in line with the hole already noted on the firewall. Measure the distance from the end of the spring to the hole in the firewall. Find and cut a wire (from a choke or throttle wire) that is slightly longer than the measured distance. Now bend the ends of the wire into a curve. Connect one end of the wire to the firewall hole and the other end to the spring. Adjust the curve on one end of the wire so that the spring is under considerable tension. Press on the accelerator and see if you generate resistance to the movement. Release the accelerator and the throttle should return to the rest on the carburetor. Continue to adjust the wire until you have smooth action and the throttle returns back to idle each time. Got all that clear??????

Ray, I have one accelerator rod that has the spring coils on the rod and the ends attached per your description. Is that original or is the spring next to the rod?

Hi Chip, I am having a hard time visualizing your description. I will go out and inspect one of my 28s and see if I understand.

Ray, The coils of the spring surround the rod. Or the rod is in the center of the spring coils. Does that help the visualization?

I have not seen that arrangement, however it may be more correct than what I advised the member.

Thanks Ray/Chip! I like the idea of the spring on the outside of the rod. That is like the brake set up underneath.. Is there anything you guys don't know???
Many thanks again! Mickey

On my 28 coach which was a totally original low mileage car, it too had the accelerator spring wrapped around the accelerator rod. It would be very hard to replicate this without bending the end of the rod into a straight position as the coil of the spring is a fairly tight fit around the rod. Chris

Ray, I sent you a couple of photos (sorry but a little fuzzy) of the throttle rod and spring on my '28 Coupe.
