Hello everyone.
Could someone with a 39 chevrolet measure the distance between the bolts attaching the front crossmember to the frame (I do not have any access to the car now). I'm trying to determine if I could fit a 40-48 crossmember and what would that imply.
For some reason the parts manuals list 39 as different from 40-48. Where exactly is the difference? From what I've understand the distance between the wheels is 3/32" bigger on the 1940 model.
(Note that it will cost me quite a lot to get it cross the ocean to where I am so it would be good to get it right first time around :)

Once someone can measure a 1939 front cross member, I can tell you what the exact dimensions are on my 1940-1948 front cross member.

On the 1940-1948 Chevroleet front cross member, I have measured the distance between the frame mounting bolt holes. On the bolts that attach the front crossmember to a 1940-1948 Chevrolet, I measured the inner attaching bolts:

22.312 inches or 22 5/16 inches is the distance between the bolt holes for the front of the crossmember.
22.625 inches or 22 5/8 inches is the distance between the bolt holes for the rear portion of the crossmember.
These dimesions are done centerline to centerline for each hole, in other words, the center of each hole.
I hope that this helps. I figure that you can convert these measurements to metric if you so desire.

Thank you both.
So with a 1/16" difference they are more or less the same.
The difference from what I could figure out is that from 1940 on they've moved the engine forward thus the engine mounting holes are towards the front of the car in 1940 and the radiator shroud is attached to a bracket instead of directly to the crossmember as in 39. Other than that they would appear to be the same.
Is there anyone that has both a 39 and 40 to confirm this?

I have a 1941 front crossmember as well as a 1939 , and the 1941 does have a plate riveted to it, to move the radiator mounting further foward on the 1941 year model. The 1939 radiator support does bolt directly through the crossmember.
I cannot get to the 1941 crossmember to measure anything on it at the moment.

Well Jack if you could have a look at both of them and see if there is any difference (except for the radiator mounting plate) it would be great (and a big help for me luv2 )
Cheers.
