The vacuum canister that operates the starterator, and the vacuum canister that operates the advance on the distributor appear to be identical in appearance. After disassembling them, the only difference I can see is the length of the tension spring in the vacuum port. Could this be true?? According to application the parts book lists different part numbers.

They may appear to be the same, but as you have found they have a different spring in each one. The spring was calculated to be used at only one task and they are NOT interchangeable.

I often wondered about the same thing. I agree that the major difference would be the spring tension. Would be easy enough to try a vac. advance unit on the Starterator and see what happens.

I used mine on my starterator just to get the car started and it worked with no problems. I had both rebuilt and I don't have the slighest clue where I installed them when I got them back. Both are working fine.

My thoughts on the situation is that the one with the stronger spring would be installed on the distributor and the weak spring on the starterator. My reasoning is that the distributer needs slow changes in operation where the starterator needs instant reaction and return to rest.
