Is the "wood" on a "late" 1949 wagon wood grain (like on a dash)??

Or is it Di-Noc transfer, like on a '54 Chev wagon??

Or maybe something else??

Thanks in advance....

Bill.

The parts book list the transfer by the roll. Then for application supplies they list bonding material, top coat, and DI-NON in highlight and solid, and by the 1/4 pint.??????

This is no early wood and late metal wagons. When they were introduced in Jan. and both types were available.Late in the year the wood wagon was discontinued, never to be seen again.

Good info Gene. Thnx so much.

I now understand the 'late' vs 'early' idea is incorrect. Both available in Jan, etc.

If restoring a 'tin' one, I presume the 'wood' would be wood grained on the metal. Like woodgraining a dash. Doesn't seem realistic to try to get Di-Noc (Di-Non ??) transfers. Altho I see in the Woodie Times mag that somebody is re-producing the Di-Noc transfers.

Any advice on restoring with wood graining vs reproduction (or god forbid due to price NOS) transfers??

In the current issue of Hemmings Motor News there is an article on the DI-NOC transfers. It is being manufactured by the roll, 48" wide. As I recall from the article, it seemed reasonably priced, maybe not much more than $160-$170 for a 10' piece (the minimum order).

Hi Bob,

Thanks for that info.

The 'current' issue would be Sept?? Or ???

I'd like to see if I can round up a copy of the issue with that article. Or even just a photocopy of the article. Don't really need the whole magazine......

Thnx.

Thanks Dean. A buddy is bringing his Sept issue tomorrow morning when he picks me up to go to a local cruise-in. I'm real interested to see the article. Bill.

42bill, I have a 51 metal woody needing the same. I witnessed a guy (some yrs ago) restore the wood-look on metal using a brush and several different solids, metallics and clears. The same technique as used in antiquing furniture but with a very, very life like 3d finish. The guy was an artist but assured me that any one could do it. I inspected his work when done and I could not believe how real the oak and mahogany looked. I think I may try this when the time comes to do my own.

findoctr,

A little update on all this.

I purchased a real nice 51 De Luxe wagon about a month ago. The exterior painted wood graining is real top quality.

I suppose your guy that said anybody could do it might be right. Definitely not for me. Maybe somebody with more talent or willingness to give it a go. Frankly, I don't see how just "anybody" could do a high quality job. Sort of the same idea as woodgraining a 41 dash. Do you want a pro job or just want it done???

Well anyway, I'm sure happy.....

Seems like an odd coincidence; but my post just above was exactly a year ago today. And the date (Oct 27) was mom’s birthday in 1915. She would have been 95 today. But she passed away in March, 2008. Still miss her. Maybe that “miss her” never goes away. Thanks again for everything, mom. And thnx to the chat folks in here for indulging me this little personal note…..

Bill,

I'll second that thought,it has been 27 years since my mother passed and the "missing" keeps right on going....I was 22 at the time, she left this earth way too early, she sure would have loved the 53....

I was 23 when my dad, at age 48, passed away. I'm rebuilding his 51 Chevy Fleetline right now. It seized up the day after his funeral - 27 yrs ago. I miss not having him here to show me how to do it but whenever I turn a bolt, I feel his presence. Because he's not here, I'm so appreciative to have this forum and everyone's help. You all give me confidence.
