Today finally arrived! Here's my new-to-us 1950 Chevrolet Deluxe Convertible. Dad has passed his other pride and joy onto me, as his retirement focus has been on trains. It has not been on the road in a few years, so he put new tires and an exhaust on before bringing it down today. A BIG thankyou goes to the VCCA for getting my parents involved in the Vintage Chevrolet hobby, and to both my parents for passing the love and respect for the old cars on to me. Meg and I are both looking forward to some top-down cruising!!

That is a beauty. luv2 Extra special that it came from your Mom & Dad. Not only are my '31 & '49 getting passed down, my 2 '96's that I bought new are going to be kept so that they too will be enjoyed and not junked. A couple of grandkids that are into old cars already asked me to do that. bana2 Being they are grandpa's and they rode in them many many times makes them special.

Thankyou for the comments guys... It's a great car, but is going to be a real challenge! My Dad has been frustrated by it for 30 years now, so he's ready to see me "enjoy" it!! It has a wiring problem in it somewhere that I need to sort out. A bad ground is causing the battery to drain overnight, and it doesn't charge strong when it's running. Dad bought a new wiring harness years ago for it, but it was difficult to install, as the previous wiring was wrong and difficult to follow, and some of the areas that are to be grounds (back of the parking lights) are rusted pretty good. It has also had constant carb problems and will need new floors sometime in the future. It's a real good 20 footer! I am also looking for a set of interior door panels and front seat from a '49-'50 convert, or a '50 Belair hardtop. Drop me a message if you know of any, or anyone reproducing the door trim. I go for the safety tomorrow, so fingers crossed that it passes!

What type of 'safety" is enforced on a 1950 car in your area?

I think they check the lights, tires, steering, horn, body mounts... basic stuff. He wasn't too long on my '51... I'm just hoping the electrics don't act up! I really need it saftied so I can get it insurred. Right now they're covering me for liability, but not damage. As soon as it's saftied, and the appraisal handed in I'm good. It's going to be parked for the winter anyway, then I can sort out the problems.

Well... the safety didn't go so well! I'm glad he caught it, but there's a small hole on the top of the gas tank. The sender in the tank for the gauge is gummed up too, so I was going to have to pull it anyway. He didn't charge me, and said he'd safety it as soon as it's fixed. Now I'm tied up deciding on a $60 patch job or a $200 new tank from Chevs of the Forties... I guess Meg will decide this one :)

I would opt for the new tank. It is more expensive but it also eliminates all the stuff in the old tank. Now if the $ 60 patch includes a thorough cleaning of the tank then I might opt for that.

Bad news on the tank front... The tank is unsalvagable (That's not true... he wanted $325 to restore it with an inner and outer liner!) So I checked into getting a new one. Chev's of the Forties asks $195 + $150 S&H+ $25 USD for a new sender. So I called Antique Chevrolet parts in Dundas, and they have them in stock for $215 CDN +$55 for the sender. Looks like I'm getting a new one on Wednesday!

Passed the safety today! I spent last night replacing the tank, then drove it up there today. I even got the old sender to work! Since he did the rest of the safety the other day, he was just looking to see it had the new tank. After we went in and did the paperwork, I came out and there was some drips on the pavement from the airvent hose. The old one was rotted, and it was all I had, so I used two good sections of it to bridge a piece of gas line, and it leaked a bit. I'm glad I noticed after, and not while he was there looking! I ran next door and bought the right tube and new clamps.

One thing I noticed is that it has no whistle in the vent. Was that an option, or not around in 1950?
