Does anyone know if the door handles for the 36 pickup are the same as those for the 34 thru 35? I don't have any handles but i believe that the passenger side has the lock and the driver side has a longer shaft. I am trying to find a pair but I am not sure what they look like. I saw one locking type in the Filling station catalog, it was for a 34-35? Need some help with this one!

I believe that the door handles are a correct interchange from 1935 thru 1938. The drivers side uses a non locking handle and the passenger side takes the locking handle. The non locking handle is probably correct for 1934 also. The difference in the locking handle is that Chevrolets had a double cut key in 1934 and a single cut key in 1935. I might have an extra handle or two around.
If you find a handle with no key, the code number is punched into the base of the handle. I can cut a key to this code (1935 and later) but is common for them to be dirty and corroded inside so a proper key is no guarantee that you will be able to lock and unlock your handle.
They can be taken apart but it is easy to damage the parts if they are stuck and not working.
Some passenger car handles look like the truck handle in question, but only the truck handle is held in place by a machine screw threaded into the end of a square stem.
I hope this helps.

Mike and chevyguy,

Thanks for the information. If anyone has an extra one or both that they would part with please email me. I have a master parts book, 1929 thru 1942. It shows a picture of the passenger side but no dim. Book also lists the differant handles for 33 -36 but the dim are differant?
Right about now I am interest in anything that will do the job

Chevy36 and chevyguy35 I have a '36 high cab that I've owned since 1965. I'd be glad to take some pictures of the handles if it would help. I'd have to email them from my aol account, rwaldbaum@aol.com, to your email account. I'm not allowed to post how-to information or pictures here because I'm no longer a VCCA member. I know that's ridiculous but it's management policy.

Chevy 36, I recently converted my '36 from 4.11 to 3.55 gears. It's a big improvement and was done with inexpensive OEM Chevy parts not expensive aftermarket stuff except for the ratio corrector on the back of the speedo head. I've been called a "Free loader" and worse for offering information on that 3.55 conversion to this forum.

Do either of you guys have or know of an empty 3-speed transmission case for one of those trucks? The truck needs a trans case with 3/8" 16tpi tapped lugs on the sides for the pedals/MC mount and for the ebrake handle.

Ray,

My 36 is not a show truck and I have upgraded some parts that purest would not do. So I am interested in your gear ratio upgrade and would appreciate any information.

Antique Mechanic, if you sincerely want to know I would be glad to tell you. I have already been kicked off this forum once for raising the issues so I have to use an alias now. If you would be willing to give me your email address I would be happy to answer your question.

For what it's worth, I was a member for over 40 years and I'm the guy who submitted the tech article that was printed in the April 2009 G & D.

Hi Jay.

Another member of this forum posted the how-to article in the 1933-36 area. I wrote that article at the request of the 1936 Chevy Owners forum but I'm not allowed to search for it here for you because I'm not a VCCA member any more. Antique Mechanic (Ray) does that fact tell you something?

If you can't find it here give me your email address and I'll send it to you. It's not a simple gear swap because the '36 rear axle is spiral bevel and the later rear axles with the 3.55 gears are hypoid. I'm a humble hobbyist, not an automotive professional, and I did it in my home shop so it's definitely doable by a guy who has some basic skills and isn't afraid to get his hands dirty.

I used a '37 Chevy car rear axle because it has the correct "Track" (width) and is hypoid so the 3.55 gears fit.

"My email is in my profile."

Antique Mechanic (Ray),

Please see my response to Jay asking for details of the 3.55 conversion. Just as I couldn't search for the article (that I wrote) for him that someone else has already posted on this forum I couldn't access your profile.

I would be more than glad to answer your question but I would need to do it by email directly to you. You may not agree with me but I'm sure you would find my perspective interesting.
