We have floating slabs here in Texas and "gumbo" (clay) soil. The Gumbo expands and contracts with moisture content much like freezing and thawing. It is the standard and if the slab is properly engineered there are no problems. It is only when the slab cracks that you get movement. If they put enough wire and fiber in the slab it will be stable.

If you are going to put a coating on the floor make sure that you do it before you move anything into the shop otherwise it will probably never get done. Once there are things in the shop you just hate to move everything out again. I know that I thought to long and then it was to late. Have fun with your new shop.

Stain and sealer and a coat of wax is the way to go. Holds up to steel wheels on shop equipment, engine stands and hoists real good. When real dirty hot mop and add another coat of wax. Wish I knew how to attach a photo.

Marc How's that hold up to welding...I'd think the wax would be an issue? Dave

Well, I think I have most of my electrical layout done for now. Enough to get using the shop. About 16 outlets, 14 F32T8/TL841 32 Watts Fluorescent Lamps, a ceiling fan, over head outlet for the door opener and a drop down cord, Compressor (still not sure of the location), natural gas heater and future 220V welder (someday ). If you go to the members only section on the VCCA site you can see the DOG's compressor articular in one of the G&D articles listed just do a search. Unless the DOG knows the year and month.

Dave, Very nice so far. Looking at you drawing it's hard to see if you have planned for hard wired fire alarm detectors. Also you may need a Co2 detector to get final sign off. While your at it, security, internet, and cable wouldn't be a bad idea! Good luck, it looks great! Because of what Skip says about the compressor, I wonder if you can get or make some vibration mounts? RayG

I have a plan for internet and I have a spare satellite dish! I haven't looked at the compressor to see if it came with any vibration mounts, it's under a tarp. If not, I'll make something up with some metal spacers and I hear tire sidewalls work as a dampner between the spacers and the floor. Dave

Wow Dave!! It looks soooo good. Especially to a guy, like me, stuck in the middle of a large city with just a two car garage. Man, I'm sure envious. But very happy for YOU.
CONGRATS to you on a nearly completed great project.....
Bill.
