I'm planning on taking the 41 Cabr. to a local sandblaster to have the underside and frame cleaned of surface rust so I can paint it. They are experienced in blasting on old cars and understand the heat and warping that can occur if not careful.

Has anyone had any experience with a similar situation and can give me any negative or encouraging words. It'll cost me around 400 bucks. I just don't have the time and inclination to crawl on my back and do the job myself using brushes and sandpaper or chimicals and just spraying on black paint will, I fear, just flake off in no time.
Thanks,
Charlie

Do you plan to remove the body to do the frame? Does your blaster have a rotisserie to do the body?

A friend at work did that without seperating the body from the frame and every time he shuts the door sand comes out from trapped places on the car. I guess eventually it would have to stop doing that but it was a problem. Just a thought.

I wouldn't do it, and you will probably regret it later. Sand will get into nooks and crannys and it will be sifting out forever. And, if any part of the drivetrain or the chassis is left in place those parts will definitely be contaminated with sand as well.

The proper way to do the job is to remove the body from the frame, and then remove everything from the body and the frame.

I agree with Mr Dog, even if the body is removed from the frame it take hours with an air hose to remove the excess sand.
After useing the air hose I spray an anti-rust additive in all of the hidden areas to trap any excess sand that might still be hidden.

I appreciate the responses.

Let me clarify something I failed to mention. The engine and transmission have been removed. The differential will be romoved when I get it to the blaster. The front fenders, hood, rear fenders, gas tank and rear fenders are already removed, also. The cowl will not be done. Just the underside and the frame. Seems that a little sand creeping out now and then from wherever it may collect, wouldn't be much of a problem. Besides, I plan on blowing her out real good and know I won't be able to get it all.

As to doing it right, the only way to do that is to take the whole mess to a restoration shop. That I'm not inclined to do for three reasons: It's not expected to win any trophies, it will be a driver and cost.

Maybe, I'll just make a rat rod out of it. I know plenty of rats. (Smile)

Anyway, your comments are causing me some serious head-scratching. Keep them comming.

If you are that far you only have a hand full of bolts to take out so you can lift the body off the frame. Then you can also put new cushions between the body and frame when you put it back together. You may also want to check into having it blasted with plastic media, it claims to be cleaner than sand and easier to clean up.

If you are going to do blasting, you should still remove the remains of the body from the frame.

All I can say is I got the frame blasted and powder coated for 300.00 bucks.I think with the primer, and the paint plus the blasting,I would have spent much more that way.
