The 1934 Standard is a Carter 285-S.

In 1941, the Carter 515-S and the Carter 518-S were also used.

Zenith lists 40 different applications for the type Q4C carburetor from 1916 through 1921, however Chevrolet is not one of them.

However, I see you are posting from Canada, and the Zenith literature sometimes is incomplete on non-USA applications.

Would like to see a scan of the original documentation for this statement, so I could add the information to my database.

Thanks, Jon

The Zenith Q4C was indeed used on Chevrolet Model T trucks. It is essentially a Zenith O-4 with a Monarch governor built into the top. I have a '20 Model T truck and several spare carburetors. Just talked to another Model T owner in California. His is a 1919 and very original.

Thanks. Any original Chevrolet documentation? Owners manual, parts book, etc. No offense meant, just like to have documentation.

Jon.

Jon,
Yes there is Chevrolet literature documenting the use. Will look it up when I get home unless I forget.

The 569-S Carter carburetor is a 1932-36 replacement.

Jon,
Glad I could reciprocate a bit of information to you. Which is only a tiny fraction of the information you have provided to VCCA members and guests.

Chipper,

Thanks for the info.

Is the number listed for the Carter W-1s the number that went on the little gold colored tab at the top of the bowl?

I thought the 1941 ended in something like .83 or so. I'm trying to get the right caburator for the 41 project car.

Best,

I know for sure that factory rebuilt carburetors had a tag with a number indicating the intended application. In most cases it was the Carter number. I suspect that all "factory" rebuilds were done in the Carter plant in St. Louis, MO.

Carburetors were initially built in two plants one owned and operated by Carter is St. Louis. The other was a Chevrolet plant in Bay City, Michigan. The Bay City carburetors have a "C" cast on the body. I have found some of those with a tag with the Chevrolet part number not the Carter number. Many are missing the number tag which is not surprising since they have been subject to various hands over the years. When Jon sees this post he likely will have some additional information.

Charlie - the 1941 Master used Carter 483s. The number is on the triangular brass tag.

If the tag is missing, this link to my website may help: http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/CarterChevroletW1.htm

Following WWII, Carter made a very small change to the casting of the 483s, and renumbered it as a 574s. The 574s was used from 1946 through 1948.

You will find the W-1, once rebuilt, to be an extremely reliable carburetor, much more so to those using the modern substitute fuel that I no longer am allowed to call by name wink as the W-1 has a leather accelerator pump which is totally impervious to certain "stuff" wink

Also, when you go to rebuild your W-1, while this link is embedded in the first link, this second link to my website is the factory Carter service instructions for the W-1: http://www.thecarburetorshop.com/Carter_W1_service.pdf

I have written authority to publish the Carter data, and, thanks to Carter Carburetor Company, you may download it as needed.

Jon.

Jon,

Thanks. That is a lot of information to absorb. I have three rebuilt W-1s. Rebuilt by American Carburator out of Jacksonville, FL. Still in the box they sent them back to me in. One of them is going to go on the project car. Whatever the stinkin' number is, I'll just have to live with it.

I am a relatively new member and just came across this post from 2010. I have a 51 Styleline Deluxe with a 216 engine (manual trans., manual choke) and have been researching correct original Rochester carbs for this car. Your list indicates two numbers for this application - 7003152 and 7003865. This matches info I have also found and it lists the 3152 as "Early" and 3865 as "Pass. Late" but gives not explanation of what is early and what is late. Does your information shed any light on this? Thanks for posting this and any help you can give me.

Jeff - "early" is before "late", and "late" is after "early" wink

My information comes from the Rochester Master Parts & Service Book, which gives no information as to the definition of early or late. My main interest is carburetors, but my interest in automobile brands is other than Chevrolet. I have virtually a complete set of Pontiac bulletins since 1927, and information such as this is printed in the Pontiac bulletins (for Pontiac).

Perhaps someone here has a good set of Chevrolet bulletins that can answer your question.

But from a practical standpoint:

You are either trying to be perfectly original, or you have a "driver". If you are trying to be perfectly original, my guess would be not 1 in 100,000 auto enthusiasts could answer your question at a car show. If you have a driver, replace either with a Carter! wink

Jon.

Jon,
Thanks for the response and thanks for publishing this information. I get that almost no one would know the difference especially with the air cleaner on that hides the tag. What's great about this hobby is that there are so many ways to enjoy it. I like the originality aspect and that is why I purchased this car which has 21,000 documented miles and is extremely original. I probably will never have it judged but the search for information and parts is still important to me. As far as the "early/late" thing, I have found that many times parts are updated when something changes related to that part or new parts from the next year are used on very late cars. The search continues.
Jeff
