Does anyone have any pictures of a correct 28 oil can. Just wondering since I picked up a nice old oil can today at a tractor show. Also where would they have been kept. Never saw an original 28 with a oil can bracket. Just curious.

I have the same problem. I have a nice old oil can but don't know where and how it should go on my '26 Touring.

Here is the right oil can from 1916 to 1931, as far as I know. It is mounted on the RHS, inside the engine room, on the firewall.

You can buy both the holder and the can by Gary Wallace, St. Louis. The can color should be copper/goldish.

Where exacty did they mount. My car has no holes on the firewall that aren't used on the RH side.

There is no oil can or oil can holder listed in any of the parts books which i have from 1916,17,18., 1922 ( all 490's ) , and 1924 (490"s and Superior).

Sorry for the missing pictures of the oil cans.

I would think the can also can be put on the LHS as well.

For 1916 - 1920 the holder most probably was made of iron string, and holding the can in a "peg".

Here is the can in engine room of Petrine:

Thank you. I'll start working on my holder tomorrow. It should be really simple to make. The only problem I see is finding some springy sheet metal for the spring tang that locks the oil can in place. I'll try a piece of lumber yard strapping. I'm also wondering how it's supposed to be mounted. There are holes in the bottom but not on the side. I would expect that the can is supposed to be upright so the short side must attach to the firewall but there aren't any mounting bolt holes there. Also I've looked through all my Chevy pictures and I cannot find any with an oil can under the hood.

Sorry. There are two holes in the backside of the holder. You can see the left screw in the bottom picture(showing the firewall). The oil can is standing as you see it.

This type was used by many car makers during those years, and a lot even with the car brand stamped on the bowl. They were mounted on the firewall inside the engine room, just like the former "string" type I saw on a 490/1920 in Idaho 2006, but I have not found confirmation from the manuals or old pictures.

The oil can featured was not used from 1929 thru 1931 in the USA.

Also, an oil can was not listed in the tool section of the Master Parts Price List For Four Cylinder Models, dated January 1, 1929.

I recommend you hold up on installing the oil cans on the 4-cylinders until I return home and have a chance to check on it.

My 1915 Amesbury Special came with an oil can on it's holder, But I believe that all Chev 4's from 490 to 28 did not come with one. After 40 years of studying and looking at Chev 4's I've never seen a Chev with an oil can. On my 28 I carry an oil can wrapped in rag in my splash apron.
My 34 Master has a factory fitted oil can and bracket.

I think I will hold up and just keep the oil can in the engine pan for now. It doesn't act like it will fall over and if it does, I'll take the rust proofing! I do not have any holes in the firewall where a bracket like that would have been used on either my 28 car or 1 ton truck. My Dads 21 490 does have the wire type oil can holder on the firewall and even had the can in it in 1975 when the car was pulled out of storage since 1930.

Many oil cans and brackets found on Chevrolets were actually aftermarket items installed by the owner of the car.

My 19 Baby Grand has an oil can on the firewall. I am at work now, but if you would like, I think that I have a picture at home, that I can post, if I can figure out how to do it.

Thanks John I reckon the other group members would enjoy seeing it.
My Amesbury is housed in a museum about 1 hour away and next time I'm down there I'll get a photo of mine. It will be easy to take as the engine is out of it at the moment.
By the way a mate of mine has 3 F series Chevs, they were available in Australia, and although are reasonably rare, there are a few still around
