A friend of mine has a 4-cyl Chevrolet engine, probably 1920. It is equipped with a SIMM magneto, type C4, number 527919, placed on the generator. Is there a condenser inside the magneto, or should there be a condenser placed outside?

I took an old 1929 International Harvester tractor mag apart one time looking for the condenser, never did find it! someone told me they were inside the armature but I didn't get that far with it and might have been just as well.

I am currently working on a story for the G&D on the Samson Truck Magneto gear drive and I already had my SIMMS file on my desk. I have an illustrated Parts List for the Simms C4 Mag that shows the #1728 Condenser clips inside the armature.
The export engines that had the mag mounted on top of the generator and chain driven off the rear of the generator for the 1918 to 1921 used the letter A- prefix for these Flint built Mag engines and for 1922 to 1923 used the Walkerville buit Canadian Products Mag engines that used the letters CPX - prefix. I wonder what the serial # is of your friend's engine?

Hi Ken

The markings on the engine are 43950-1 (serial number?) and B-30-20 (manufacturing date? Seems odd - did we have 30 days i February 1920??)
