Is the fuel line from the carburetor to the fuel pump copper or steal? I always thought it was copper but noted the filling station is selling a steel fuel line?

Some of the cars had a steel line going from the fuel pump to the carburetor and some had a copper line. I have seen more 1929-30 cars with cooper lines than I have with steel lines, however, apparently they came both ways. The original line on my 1930 was copper.

The early engines had non-steel lines, some were brass. I haven't ever seen a 216 or a 235 with copper fuel lines.

The original factory installed fuel lines were brass up to approximately 1929 - 1930 production. Since extremely few original lines survived it is difficult to tell exactly when the brass was discontinued and steel lines installation began.

The problem with brass lines is that they work harden and crack from the vibration of the vehicle. However there are a few vehicles with the original brass.

There is no documentation of the factory ever using copper lines but plenty of listings in the Parts Books for replacement copper. It was common for copper to be used as replacement as it could be easily formed by hand to replace the factory lines. Because of the shortcomings of the original brass the vast majority of old Chevys have copper replacement lines that many consider to be erroneously believe to be original.
