I also had the post about transmission leak.

I bought a new speedometer cable (complete unit)on e-bay because I thought the old one was the leaking problem. I installed it but did not pull the cable to lubricate it before installation.
What is the recommended lube for the cable?

I always coat them with plain old chassis grease or wheel bearing grease. Just rub on a thick coating and slide it into the housing.

Hey Chip, Using chassis grease can cause other problems. Like breaking the cable, at least that is what I've been told. 600 weight oil might be better.

Anyone else have any thoughts?

I have used motor oil, chassis grease, wheel bearing grease and assembly lube with good results. The key is to only lube the bottom 2/3 and coat completely but lightly. If you use too much it can migrate to the speedometer head and mess it up.

There is a special speedometer lube that you can use as well. I have seen two types. One is jelly type of substance, kinda sorta like Vaseline. The other comes in a tube and it is a smooth white speedometer lube, very similar to the white cup grease that you can purchase at NAPA. Either one would work just fine.

The shop that rebuilt my speedo cable advised to use only lubriplate#105 and not chassis grease.

What about white lithium grease?

I notice that when I look up lubriplate 105 on the internet the properties seem similar to white lithium engine assembly lube.

I ask because my speedometer began to make the typical "i need lubrication" noise and go violently back and forth in different directions then started going to 80 and making a horrible noise. I quickly pulled over and disconnected it so as not to break the cable so I plan to lubricated it and hopefully that will help.

Thanks,
Brandon

Alrighty. Thanks, I just bought some white lithium grease to put some bearings in so I'll use that.

The #105 is the white lithium assembly grease. I checked a little further and see that its listed as a # 0 wt. Also found that the white lithuim is available in other wts., such as Lith-ease which is a #2. No idea what difference it makes but I've had good luck with the 105.
