I'm about ready to start the interior on my 38, in fact have ordered the kit. At what point should the top go on? The car had no interior or top when I got it so didn't get to take it apart for reference.

I've not put a top on but in theory, if putting it on requires crawling around inside the car, I'd put the top on before the interior is there to get in the way.

The top can be installed either before or after the interior. Since the top will help protect the interior I always install it first.

On my '48 convertible I put in the interior first. I ordered it from Hampton Coach and a friend helped me install the kit except for the top well and the rear side panels. The kit came with fabric to put in the top well and the top guy I thought would have to adjust the rear quarter windows to fit the top. Of course your '38 doesn't have rear panels or quarter windows. After the interior was done except the top well and rear quarter panels, I took the car to have a custom made top put on. The top guy said he would install the fabric in the top well because it needed to be done first and he said he would install the rear quarter panels after he adjusted the rear windows. I'd advise you to have a custom made top over a top kit. I've been happy with my top. It was done in '85 and still looks good...

Thanks guys for all the input. Anyone know of an excellent top shop in driving distance from southwest Ohio?

Is the Stayfast brand of top best for a 41 or are other top materials just a good?
