I am trying to get my windshield to open. It was tacked shut in the middle of the top frame. I cut the tack and uncaulked the top . Is there a trick to freeing these up or do I have to completely remove the window. If so, how does it come out.

Be careful to not put to much pressure on the window crank because they will strip out very easy. Once you remove the window you will have to replace all of the seals because the old ones will not bend for the removal very well. If you want to get it to slide as is you will have to get under the glass with a wedge and apply a little pressure while turning the crank. a little oil on the edges will sometimes help. If you have a glass suction cup to put on the glass for lifting that is better than putting a wedge under it. In all cases be as careful as you can until it is loose or something will break. Good luck.

The crank is already broken. I have parts comming to fix it. I was trying to free it up before I put the new assembly in. If I have to remove the window, how does it come out. I don't have a break down of it.

Page 257 of the 1931 Chevrolet Repair Manual has the removal and replacement instructions. Reprints of the manual are available from numerous repro & replacement part suppliers and literature sellers. You will need the manual for a bunch of repairs, adjustments, etc.

It is also recommended that you purchase a reprint of the 1926-31 Fisher Body Manual. There is a lot of useful information in that manual that you are going to need.

JYD -- Is there a similar Body Manual for the open cars? I'm getting ready to start on my '30 Phaeton and I'm sure it would help if there is one. I haven't seen one anywhere so far.

Tks, WLB.

Nope, only the Fisher Body Manual for closed cars. As you know, the open car bodies were made by Chevrolet.
