Why did the 41 (maybe thru 48) carry a heavier duty front coil spring and the lighter 7 leaf rear spring instead of the heavier duty 8 leaf spring?

I'm shooting from memory because I can't put my hand on the parts book right now. Still, I think my memory is right on this. It just seems to me that if they needed a stiffer coil spring then they would have a stiffer rear spring, as well.
Thanks,
Charlie

The 1941 parts book lists three coil springs for 1941 but no mention of body style.
#3653059 1310 pounds of tension
5245543 1350 pounds
5246233 1600 pounds

1944 book shows no models

1952 parts book lists 7 leaf rear springs for 1941-48 convertible with the 8 leaf as heavy duty. The same spring also fits most sedans.

I would assume the increased weight of the convertible would be mostly on the rear wheels but due to the narrow rear seat the seat is only for 2 passengers and not 3.

I have seen 1939-48's with heavy duty front springs and it looks like the car is on a bumper jack.

Charlie, My 48 convertible still has the original covered springs on it and they are 7 leaves. So far they are fine and I haven't had any problems with them....Joe

Well, I have a NOS covered set for my 1941 that I got in Carlisle years ago (not cheap). But, alas, they are 8 leaf. If I don't find a NOS set of 7 leafers by the time I set out for Flint, then that's what she'll be a-riding on. I'll probably stuff enough spare parts to in the trunk to make her sit fairly level anyway. You ever look at that list of stuff to take on a trip over in the discussion forum?

At least it won't be a-sitting low in the rear like some of those eastern Tennessee hillbillies a-hauling liquor. After all, back in the day, what was the good of owning a "business" coupe in eastern Tennessee if you weren't a-hauling sugar to, or product from, the still.?
Charlie

BTW: Seems there used to be a famous one that had a reputation of being souped up and was used to make late night deliveries in those hollows. Rumor has it that it used to outrun the law every time. I think I heard that it is still out their but is now painted green. hmmm... I wonder ... You know.
