I have a late model car that requires synthetic oil and was wondering If anyone runs synthetic oil in their classic car? If so, notice anything different? Just wondering. Richard

I have run synthetic oil in my 1939, 1950 and 1957 (it has synthetic in it now). I have never noticed any difference. Used it mainly before some long trips and tours where I would run the oil up to 3000 miles on a fill.. Regular oils are so good today I don't think there is an advantage under normal conditions. I do run synthetic in my modern cars. For cold weather starting and fast oil circulation when cold and for the short trip diving they are subject to. The main advantage in syn. Is that it flows better when cold and stays in grade better and for a longer period of time when hot.The modern GM cars that require synthetic do so because of the high temperatur the oils run.

The amount of zinc has been REDUCED in the oil. There was NO zinc in oil prior to the mid '50's and the older engines with there forged steel camshafts, low lift cam lobes, and weak valve springs do not need zinc. The exception would be for breaking in a new cam and set of lifters.

I run synthetic in my 88 BMW and will run in my Corvair when I've finished the break-in (only 2600 km so far). Mainly I run it so I can just change it once a year, whether I drive it 3000 or 10000 km. Faster circulation on startup, which is nice after its been sitting for weeks or months between uses. But I use Synthetic CI-4. That gives me the benefit of the high film strength of the synthetic and the high anti-wear/detergency of the CI-4 (diesel) formulation that protects the sliding parts of the valve train. I've been running Mobil I in my 96 Impala SS since I acquired it in 1999. Not sure why, other than the original owner said he did.
All my other cars run regular, old 10-30. My '54 hardtop still seems fine after 30 plus years with 10-30. Bought a case today on "sale" at $1.99 per quart. Dang, $1.99!!! But, that's a whole nuther story.....

Ray,
At my "local" Fred Meyer on 67th and Glisan. I presume that price is good at all FM stores.
I'm not sure if I mentioned it in the original post, the oil is Chevron 10w-30. That was the only one "on sale." All others were much higher. Around 2.79, maybe even higher....
Bill.
PS: No coupon, etc. Just on the shelf at $1.99.....

Ray,
I stopped at Schuck's (O'Reilly's) yesterday to use the gift card doorprize from the NW Meet. Discovered they also have Chevron oil on sale for $1.99 / qt. Their sale lasts til Tues, end of month, August 31st.
Sorta just an FYI......
Bill.

I stopped at a FM on the way home from the Lo Lo Pass tour and purchased 4 cases @ $1.99. 2 gallons of permanent (extended life) antifreeze, a gallon of windshield washer fluid, and two oil filters. See what you got me into Bill.

Way to go Ray! Sort of like a mini-stimulus program!! No doubt you'll use all of it in time. Always nice to get stuff "on sale."

Must be an Oregon thing....??? Bruce, I don't know if it's (just) an Oregon thing. But I wouldn't be surprised if different "zones" had different sale items, marketing plans/dates/etc. etc. Twas just lucky for me the oil was on sale when I needed some. Hope all is well.... Bill.
