Hello everyone, I am new here, I just bought a 1940 chevy coupe. The previos owner made a gas tank for the car. He also installed a trunk floor. I would like to install a stock gas tank and staps. When he installed the trunk floor all the hardware that was used to secure the straps to the tank were removed . My question is how do I put it back stock? How do I get the J-olts and the mechinizm that connects the strap to the trunk floor?

Is your 1940 coupe a business coupe (no back seat) or a club coupe with a back seat?
The business coupe gas tank was behind the front seat. There was a wood platform over it and it sat on the floor. The filler was under the right quarter window. The club coupe had the tank under the trunk floor and the trunk floor was higher to make room for the tank. It had the filler in the right fender.

The body style number stamped into the Fisher Body plate on the firewall would tell the story.

You can see the gas tank filler pipe on an original 40 Chevy business coupe on the following website.

www.1940chevrolet.com
then click on "1940 Chevrolet"

If you fill gas in the car just below the passenger side little window as shown on the website, then you have a business coupe.

Your tank bolts directly to the frame with 4 bolts - there were no straps used.It actually hangs from the frame, between the frame rails & the flange on the tank bolt to the frame.

Thanks Sparky, now for the 60 thousand dollar question what does this look like. I have seen the tank for sale , now where are these holes and can I access them?

Actually there are only 3 bolts not the 4 as I stated earlier that mount your tank to the frame. Their is one on the drivers side & 2 on the passengers side. There are brackets rivited to the inside of the frame that stick out past the frame, the drivers side is about 5" long & the passengers side is about 10" long & that is where the tank mounts to. It bolts up from the bottom. Hope this helps.

Note the tank fits all 1940 models except the business coupe and sedan delivery.
