Recently I aquired an extra RJH-08 ('29-'31) Carter carb. The brass bowl has some cracks. Before I have them soldered up do I need to drill small holes right where the cracks end? So as to stop any more crack expantion. Also, what is the best kind of solder to use? TIA, Bob The 1929 Chevrolet: The Most Outstanding Chevrolet in Chevrolet History

Once the brass begins to stress crack it is necessary to anneal to remove the stress. Then the cracks can be soldered or silver soldered. Drilling a hole in the end of the crack is a good idea if you can actually find the end. Many times the actual end extends beyond what is visible. An alternate is replace with a reproduction. They are available from several suppliers.

The cost of one of the repop bowls would almost be the same for what I paid for the carb. I'm going to try and low bucks it and repair it. How do you anneal the brass, pre heat it? Thanks JYD and Chipper. Bob

If you want to "Low Ball" it just solder with soft solder use some acid core, and buy the cheap soft solder, maybe even use some flux-solder for copper tubing apply some 50-50 solder and paste flux mix, first . There isn't any point in spending a lot of time or money on a cracked bowl. I have annealed brass rifle and pistol cases, didn't help much, there are several ways......

I have a very good used bowl I could make you a good deal on. It would save you some money and work.

To anneal the brass it is necessary to heat it to dull reddish color and then let cool back in air. No forced cooling.
