I think President Don hit the nail on the head with the ending part of his message especially "Don't introduce yourself and start explaining to hin of her what is "wrong" with their car."

This should also apply to member to member with stock vehicles. I have had members start telling me what is wrong with my cars when I did not have them on the judging field and I did not ask them.

If a member wants to know what is wrong with their vehicle they will ask or enter it in judging.

Right on, Back Roads!
Most of us have a big enough problem figureing out what is wrong with our own cars..........If we want to know we may of maybe not find out by having it judged. It isn't too unusual for different results between two or three different VCCA shows.

We had our '31 judged about 30 times. Always within 10 points but almost never the same deductions.

I couldn't agree more with Prez Don's "suggestion" at the end of another well written message in the June G and D.

And also with Jim's comments.

The worst part of all this is the number of times I've over-heard one of the so called "experts" start commenting about the guy's car and the comments are actually what is wrong!

Giving the poor guy's car a dressing down when he didn't ask for it is bad enough! But when the dressing downer is wrong, it's even worse!!

Both happen way to frequently, in my opinion....

Here-Here to Don regarding the messages.and to everyone who supports it.

I've heard negative comments to many times. So I hope his message sinks in with people who use this process to tout their knowledge.

As a result of odd and judgmental remark 10-12 people have flat turned me down about joining VCCA. In Marketing we know bad news travels at a speed that is beyond understanding. And does not stop until damage is done.

Way to go Don,

Remember when mom said,

If you don't have anything good to say, don't say anything at all.

Man-oh-man, mom was even smarter than we knew!!!!

Guys
Lets not confuse the judging field with a get together. Nobody forces anyone to have their car judged, a member does it on their own. Once on the playing field you do open yourself up for comment. Some can't take and others use it to make their car better. It is just part of that game and an aspect of the hobby, it is not for everyone.

One of the most important issues I learned a very long time ago about judging was to refrain from the phrase "that is not correct" or " that is wrong".

I use the phrase, "it is not what is expected for this model/year/trim level based on normal Chevrolet RPO's."

First, it is not offensive to an owner. And we all know a few of these owners treat their vehicles like offspring.
Second, there are a few anomilies out there that Chevrolet did do.... if it is truely "that rare" the prepared owner usually has good documentation to support the difference from normal production options/accessories/drivelines.

I have been on both sides of the fence and there are some judges out there that should reconsider their responsibility and others that should run for a political office.

Great words "it is not what is expected for this model/year/trim level based on normal Chevrolet RPO's." I'll remember that...

I have helped with judging a few times. Guess I'm luckier than most but the Sr. judges I've worked with are great {Larry Pearson, Carmine Palazzo} and VERY experienced, reasonable and diplomatic.

As you pointed out, there are judges who do not choose the appropriate wording when responding.

The line I live by is, "It must look just as it did, the day it rolled off the assembly line." This has improved my awareness and understanding of the cars I'm judging. As well as the VCCA judging manual has helped a lot.

As Don W. pointed out in his Prez. letter it's not just in the "judging" that members can hear the wrong words. Some receive odd comments when their Chevrolet is on display. So my view is, be nice and respectful of other people, cars, efforts, investment, abilities, personal choices, standards and pride. blush

Enjoy the ride,
Michael41
