I have seen postings on the removal of the gear shift but I cannot find them. What is the trick to removing the gear shift lever on a 29, 3 speed? Do you need special tools to do it? Thanks for your help.

The stamped metal center next to the gear shift lever can be pushed down and rotated counterclockwise to release the lever. It is held in with a strong spring and slots that contact pins in the top casting so be careful. Someone posted a homemade tool to do the job awhile back. A search may find it.

Someone also suggested a block of wood with a hole in it for the shift lever. You then place the block of wood at the base of the the shift lever, press down on the ends of the wood and twist. Make sure you have applied a lot of penetrating oil first to loosen things up.

this is what you're dealing with push down and twist counter clockwise. this can be difficult if the inside of the tower is all gunked up

Chip, Got "er" done. Worked like a champ. Press down and turn counter clockwise, piece of cake. Thanks again.

Thanks everyone else for your tips. I was able to do it with two screwdrivers which were lying horizontal to the gear shift lever as it was standing upright. Rotate clockwise after spraying with Blaster. No problem.
