Hello, all:

I'm a member of the Society of Automotive Historians, and I'm researching the production of passenger cars during the World War II period (and the associated sales, delivery, and registration figures) for every make of car in the world. I have been quite successful with regard to foreign makes.

I have discovered that some 1942 models of every U.S. manufacturer were frozen in storage after the government shut-down, and were subsequently sold (still brand-new) during late 1942, 1943, 1944, and the first half of 1945. Some states apparently titled the cars as new cars of the years they were sold in.

In the case of Ford, I have discovered that there was continued production of "Fordor" sedans (mainly) during the entire war period, for the military. I even have some figures. There were also foreign assemblies of American-type Fords in places such as Brazil and Sweden during the war years.

In the case of Chevy, however, I only have blurbs that blackout coupes and sedans were continued in production during 1943-44-45, for the military and gov't. Does anyone have any detailed information on these cars, such as production figures?

Thanks very much to anyone who can assist.

Bill

Bill,

What an interesting study, afraid I can't help out, but would ask that in the event you get any information that you might share it with us.

Good luck and Green Lights,

Hi, Wes:

Thanks very much for the interest. Seeking and not finding much on the subject has caused me to undertake the research myself.

If you or anyone else is interested in monthly new-car registration figures for the wartime period, I'd be happy to post them. They are industry-wide figures, not broken down by manufacturer; but they are broken down by vehicle type (cars and trucks).

I'd also be happy to post the Ford figures.

Here is something interesting sent to me by Christo Datini of the G.M. Heritage Center:

The G.M. annual reports for the period 1942-1946 note the total worldwide unit sales for General Motors but do not break the numbers down by division.

1942 - 101,586 Passenger Cars (348,806 Total Cars and Trucks)
1943 - 708 Passenger Cars (194,144)
1944 - 79 Passenger Cars (317,032)
1945 - 24,331 Passenger Cars (308,044)
