Does anyone know if the expansion plug used at the rear of the engine block for access to the camshaft bearings is a standard size? If so, what size is it?

Mark,
According to the 1952 parts book, Plug(s), Camshaft Bearing Hole are the following:

32-34 All...........1 5/8 dia.................836574
35-36 All...........1 3/4 dia.................837646
37-52 All...........2 .............................838127

Hope this helps,
Charlie

Charlie,

Thanks for the info. With a bore diameter of approximately 1.972", I thought a 2" plug would be too tight a fit. I found that a 50mm plug was just about right, with a .012" squeeze. I had to machine off most of the lip of the cup type plug so that the lip of the plug would be flush with the machined rear face of the block and the plug would not be in contact with the rear end of the camshaft.

I see what appears to be a drain hole in the block, right at the rear end of the camshaft. I'm guessing this was put there to prevent the rear plug from being subjected to full camshaft bearing oil pressure. That being the case, I think my 50mm plug will be leak-tight.

While you have the plug out I would advise you make sure that drain hole is clear. I doubt that there will ever be enough pressure to dislodge the plug but better to be sure than sorry.
