Does anyone know where I could buy new front wheel bearings for a 1918 490? I couldnt find them listed in Gary Wallaces catalog.

I recall at one time there being a discussion that Model T Furd front wheel bearings were interchangable. You might also try Langs or Gas Light Auto for those parts.

As far as I can see, neither Filling Station nor Gary Wallace have the front wheel bearings in their catalogs.

Use front T-F**D parts (Timken) instead, as they will fit just the same.

You will have to take note that the outer bearings are threaded for LH or RH sides.
The RH spindle on a 490 uses a Left hand threaded nut originally, Part number H184, and the Left hand spindle has a right hand threaded nut originally. Part number H341

Try these guys. They are an industrial bearing supply house and have gotten bearings for everything I ever needed and cheap too! Saved me over $1000 on bearings for an old tractor I rebuilt. They may not be able to get the exact old style but can cross them to a more modern type if needed. They may suprise you and be able to get the original also as they have good contacts for getting long discontinued bearings. They stock something like 60,000 different bearings and seals. I have some old catalogs and found SOME evidence that the front wheel bearings for your Chevy also fit the Model T F**d.
If this is true, I have a complete set of new, Timken bearings I could sell you.
I will go to see my Buddy after work today. He has some more early catalogs and might have one that will conclusively answer this question. This info will be valuable to others in the future so I want to make sure I get it right.
If anyone could provide some numbers from their 490 front wheel bearings, that might be helpful also.

I finally found it.
A 1926 auto parts catalog lists the same front wheel bearings for Chevrolet 490 and Model T F**d. Interestingly, they are 50 cents cheaper in the Chevy section. No year range is given for the 490. This may mean that all 490s use the same front wheel bearings but I have not tried to confirm this through any other source.
I hope this info is useful to you guys with the early stuff.

Both threaded and smooth bore outer bearings are fitted to 490 models. I can't give you the exact change date. My 1922 490 parts book which covers all 490's, lists both types.
Two different steering knuckles are also listed.
The easiest way to determine if you need a threaded outer bearing is the length of the the outer thread. If you have a 2" thread you will need to use threaded outer bearings.If you have a 1" threaded length then you will also have about 1" smooth shaft for the smooth bore bearing to fit on.

It looks like you already got some great information from these guys, but for future information...

If you have the original bearings have a number on the side of the races. This number can crossed-over with the help of an IBI bearing cross-over manual to determine other bearing manufacturers and styles for dimensional fits. Then upon review of load ratings and bearing fits, a decision can be made. Check with a local bearing supplier.

I have also bought a number of parts from Langs and Snyders on parts that are common style of the Model T. Sometimes I wish our parts were as easy as opening a catalog - but then where's the fun in that?
