Need a Carter W1-284S for my 35 Chevy Master Deluxe. Have rebuiilt mine twice but still is too rich at idle and too lean when running. If anyone can direct me to a site or party I can purchase another for my 207 6 cylinger, I would be much obliged.

Hey Dufdaddy,
I might be able to tell you how to fix it if you want to try it again. It sounds like you have the same problem I had with my 284S. Is your vacuum advance working? If its not moving when you watch it then it is your vacuum passage which is plugged. In a Carter book about 5 years ago I found the solution and it is really easy to fix. You just need to remove some of the rivets and clean the passage out. If you want I can send you some copper rivets to replace the ones you remove.

Duf, You may want to expand your search and look for a W-1 569S. This was the universal replacement carb used by Chevy dealers for several years, I believe from '32 to '36. It can be identified by a casting number 421 on the face of the mounting flange. I have one on mine and it's a very good unit.

Thanks for the info, will get together with my buddy who rebuilt the W1 and see if he had trouble with the vacuum advance. Will let you know and get the copper rivets from ya.
Thanks much, Dufdaddy

Thanks for getting back to me. This gives me another option if I can't fix or replace the 284.

Checked with my buddy who rebuilt the W1, the vaccum control was fully operable, so that's not the problem. will probably have to find another W1. Thanks for your help. Seems like the only answer is another carb.

Well, I'm going to still bet on it being the problem since it took me months to find the problem on my car. It is not something easy to see with out removing the plugs. And you will think that it’s working because the throttle shaft is leaking. Does your carb look like this? This is one of the ones that I restored for my car. The one that you see here is made by Chevrolet, the other one that I restored is made by Carter. If you want another 34/35 carb send me an e-mail. Can't guarantee that the one I send you will work as this was a very common problem from the service bulletin which Carter published. Another option if you want, I can take a look at your carb.

Greatly appreiciate your offer to work on my little carb. The picture you have included does'nt seem to resemble mine. I'm positive it is a Carter W1, just not sure of the model number. Be that as it may, I was able to contact one of the VCCA members in Texas who advertises in the G & D magazine. Super guy who asked me to send him the carb. He will either get the carb working right or keep it and send me another Carter W1, different model, that works better with fewer problems. Thanks a bunch for your help.

Sounds like you talked with Chip. Chip will get it to work for you. If he doesn't have the right carb, I have a extra 34/35 which I don't need.

I have a 34 master and had a similar problem. Then I discovered that the vacume hose to the wiper was rotted and leaking. The short hose connects the copper line to the wiper motor. (beside the wiper motor which is behind the headliner above the windsheild) When I fixed this the carb worked much better....
