My 1927 manual calls out a truck tire removal tool. It is used to colapse a split ring ring fo a wood tool. I have been reading some information about changing tires and I see things link beating the tire off, use a screw driver, etc, etc. Seems like someone should make or this tool or a similar tool is available. Does anyone have any idease on how to remove the tire safely?

Dream Cruise: There's some for sale on Ebay. Enter rim tool in auto section. Here's one.

I hope this helps.

It is so easy....even a caveman could do it!
First pull the rim off the wood wheel fetlo, let the air out of the tire, break the bead from the collapsable rim on both sides of the tire, I use a long handle tire tool, the one that also has a lug nut wrench on the handle end, and a short tire tool or long screw driver to hold the bead open as you go around the tire. Now mount the rim spreader (that one on eBay is just what you need for a car, it may work on a truck), next remove the cotter key from the latch or rotate the tab to release the rim latch, now use the rim tool to collapse the rim JUST enough to remove the rim from the tube and casing. Too much collapseing could ruin the rim, repair the hole in the tube or replace the tube, the inner flap and the casing centering the valve stem in the hole, carefully use the rim tool to spread the rim, watching the valve stem, and latch the rim together. Air it up and put it back on the wheel fetlo. Caution! Be very sure to get it on the rim correctly. If it is correct the rim bolts and valve stem will be in the right place, if wrong it can be heck to get back off, ask me how I know!

Thanks for the information. I have a tool like the one on eBay. It will not colapse the rim enough to take the wheel off. That is even after I have the screw completely turned. The tool in the manual looks different.

I agree the tool in the manual looks way different. I have been resistant to buy a tool like the one you own from Ebay, and the last tire I mounted on the rim with a great deal of distress, But I eventually won. I have been told by many that the tool shown works great however. I have three more tires to change. By the way I cut the old fossilized tires off the rim with a sawsall. Kind of fun!

I hear there are 3 different size rim spreaders so be sure to get one that will fit your rim and don't collapse the rim too much or it will bend! Just collapse it enough to use the tire tools to work the tire off or back on. Fixing a bent rim is a nightmare!

What do you mean by

take the wheel off
Do you mean "take the tire off the rim?" That is what the rim spreader-contractor is made for.
What size are your rims and tires?
