Hi Larhawk,

May I be the first to welcome you to our forum.

Now pull up a chair over there by the door and we will talk about voltage changing. DON'T DO IT!

Home work for the class, if you are having problems with the 6V system converting to 12V will cover it for a while but the underlying problems will show up eventually. A properly sized 6V battery, 6V positive cable of at least 01 gage and proper gound cable with all connectionb clean will solve 99.9 percent of the percieved 6V problems. talk

Good advice Ray, and I agree 100%. I keep all my connections clean, a fresh battery and the starter and generator in good health and have bright lights and start just fine.
To power my 12v devices I use a voltage booster tucked up under the dash to power any 12v devices, which in my case is a small tach and a sony CD/Radio. No new holes, and nothing that I can't pop out given five minutes.

I've got a number of vehicles all with 6 volt systems and wouldn't think of changing to 12 volts. As said above, make sure you have large enough cables, also make sure to clean all connections and make sure that the wire ends are in good shape. Once everything is up to spec you'll be happy with the 6 volts.

Hello There,
I have a 51 with a 6volt system that I don't want to change. I would like to put in a 12 volt radio and 12 volt fog lights. What would I have to do and where do I get the parts to do it. Thanks for any info.

You can get 6 volt fog lights for your '51.

The easiest thing to do on the radio is to put a portable battery operated stereo in your car and then you have no conversion to do. But, if you still want to install a 12 volt radio on your 6 volt system, you can get a voltage inverter from the Filling Station for $65.00. Go here: www.fillingstation.com

I saw a couple years ago on an edition of TRUCKS on where Stacy David presented a 12V battery that had 6V terminals (or vice versa) on the side for those who wanted to keep original equipment where possible. Don't remember the brand name though.

I also found a device on the internet that allows you to play an ipod through your AM radio. How cool is that??
