How do I set up the chock spring on a W-1? No way seems right and I didn't get a good look at it when I took it off. What is this spring working to do? Pics would be awesome!

Well, (deep subject) what year W-1 do you have? If you don't know the year is there a triangular brass tag with a number followed by an "S" embossed on it? There are several choke springs used on the W-1 carburetors. Some are easy to install others not so!

If it is for a '48 the spring is not too easy to install. It is necessary to remove the choke shaft lever assembly and then the choke lever assembly. That retainer ring that hold the choke lever assembly is a bit tricky to remove and install.

Does 839500 make sense? I think that is what is on the tag. I am trying to figure out exactly what the spring does. Is it supposed to pull the valve shut when the lever is moved but still allow the flap to open against spring tension? the way I have it installed now that is how it is operating.

839500 is a Carter 483S which was installed originally on '41-2 both civilian and military. The description of how your choke works is right on the money. It allows the choke to close when the engine is not running but progressively open as the rpms increase. Actually all W-1 carbs have that feature. The way to accomplish that changed from two piece choke plates and center shaft to the single plate with offset shaft.

Well great! So it is on there correctly. Is there any benefit to finding a '48 carb performance wise?

Not really much difference in those carbs.
