Were back-up lights standard equipment on Belair in 1953? (as opposed to the 150 and 210) I had thought that they were, but am beginning to understand that they were still an option, even on Belair.
If they were not standard equipment, was the bottom portion of the taillight assembly still a white lens, but just a dummy?
Thanks.

Back-up light was an accessory in 1953. Came with a bulb and socket to plug into present housing. The 1958 and up Impalas were the first to have back-up lights as standard equipment. If I remember correctly all 1966 and up had them because of government regulation......like out side mirrors and dual sun visors.

So, all 53's were produced with a white lens in the bottom of the taillight assembly, and it was a "dummy" unless the back up light option was purchased?

Yes and the "KIT" came with a backup light switch that worked off the Reverse 1st gear shifting linkage. I took all of the backup light equipment off of my 53, because the wireing was all shot.
