I need to remove the Chevrolet emblem on the front of the radiator to rechrome the cowl. What is the trick to safe removal without breaking the emblem? Does it screw off, tap out or is it otherwise?

Thanks in advance.

if its the stock one. its pressed in. if its a repoped one its screwed in.
to remove the stock one. tap it out around the edges VERY LIGHLY.
NOTE you might bend the lip removing it but you can bend it back after you get it out.

the only reason why i know is i just did mine over the winter on my 30.
FYI it costs me 600$ to get mine redone.
NOTE to get the lower rad support rivets out. you need to grind out from the back. drill a hole in the center of the rivet and tap out the rivet.

Great information. I wondered about taking the rad support off before I take it to the shop. I will take the cowling on Monday to find out what it is to cost me. Sure glad I don't have a heart condition.

You might also spray some PB Blaster on the back of the emblem. If there is any rust on the back of the emblem that will help desolve the rust to make it easier to remove. You might try using a large dowel rod / wood broom handle to use as a punch to hit against the emblem ring. This might help prevent you from slipping and damagine the emblem or the radiator shell. Good Luck with the project.

Thanks again for your helpful tips. I used a socket slightly smaller than the opening tapped very lightly and it popped out with no problem. Now I will move onto removing the support across the bottom and the cowling will be ready to rechrome.

Thanks until I run into the next item of puzzelment. (probably sooner rather than later)

Mine was pressed in and held in place with solder. I heated the back with a propane torch (lightly, just enough to soften the solder) and the emblem popped off with no damge to the shell or emblem. When the shell came back from the plater, I used epoxy to hold it place.
